“Superman Man of Steel” Movie Review

ForCarol.com Movie Review 3-Watertowers(Half Great, Half Not)

-

The first half, or a little more, of this movie was fantastic.  The second half (maybe a little less) was overly complicated, the fight scenes were somewhat silly, and the movie dragged on for a very long time.

supermanA new Superman (Henry Cavill) escapes Krypton with the help of his father and mother (Russell Crowe and Ayelet Zurer) and lands in Smallville, Kansas.  Martha and Jonathan Kent (Diane Lane and Kevin Costner) find Kal-El, name him Clark Kent and raise him as a good ole, modest, Kansas boy.

Clark is special, but, his Dad tells him to keep it under his hat (which he does for the most part) until the time comes when he will change the world.

That time comes when Clark is 33 years old and an old nemesis threatens earth unless Kal-El surrenders.  Which he does.

What follows are a string of battles between evenly matched opponents that include lots of poking holes in buildings (over and over and over again), crashing trains, bringing down A-10 Warthogs, etc. etc.   Whew…

There are no f-words that I recall, but, there may have been.  Kids as well as adults will enjoy it.  YES…I enjoyed it except for the ending that dragged and dragged and dragged. On the bright side, he wore a Kansas t-shirt at one point (yes, I went to KU), and there were some smart and funny lines in the first half.  On the other hand, there were some inane lines in the second half  ”The only way this will end is when one of us dies…”  DUH…and pokes thru 10,000 buildings in the process…over and over and over and over again.

“The Internship” Movie Review

4-Watertowers ForCarol.com Movie Review(Google-y Fun)

What time is it?

Since you probably did not look at your wrist to answer that question explains why Owen Wilson (as Nick Campbell) and Vince Vaughn (as Billy McMahon) are newly unemployed with few skills to be successful in the workplace.

the internship teamBilly is searching online when he stumbles upon a Google summer Internship that promises a full-time job to the winning team at the end of the summer.  Participating in a Google Hangout interview (you’re welcome), the two old guys actually do a decent job answering totally stupid questions (I applied for a Google job once and when they asked me about high school…I stopped….they want to hire “kids”).

Off to California where Wilson and Vaughn are the oldest and least skilled Interns in the program.  What follows is a very funny and sometimes touching movie that got better and better as it proceeded.  We find out that there is more to life than just programming in a fake bubble created by Google (or any other high tech firm catering to kids as their employees).

I was initially turned off by the adolescent way Google treats their kid employees.  I mean slides to move from one floor to another, nap pods, playgrounds….give me a break.  I do agree with the open collaboration work space (I own AltamontCowork)…but, the rest makes me glad I am too old to work there.  I am a big fan of Google, but, I am definitely not “Google-y” with a helicopter beanie….

Over time, Wilson and Vaughn (who were both terrific) add  humanity and common sense to the Internship team they are part of (yes, there is more to life than coding in a bubble).  No f-words that I recall, and the whole family might enjoy it.  Especially the older teens to mid-20′s.   “The Internship”  is colorful and fun, and provides an interesting look into the changing workplace.    Watch for the somewhat creepy character cameos by Will Ferrell and Rob Riggle.

I LOVED the Harry Potter and X-Men parts of the story and the very quick reference to “A Game of Thrones” (pay attention to hear it).  Was the pizza guys name “Papa John”?  Gotta watch it again….

We are going to buy it…

“Now You See Me” Movie Review

3.5-Watertowers ForCarol.com movie reviews(Deceptively Delightful)

Four street magicians each receive a card giving them a location and time to meet.  They show up and become “The Four Horsemen”, a very successful Las Vegas magic act.

now you see meBut they are really auditioning for “The Eye”.   Magic is a trick, but, it is also real.  And only the best of the best are admitted to The Eye.

The Four Horsemen have a magic trick to top all magic tricks.  To rob a bank. Stunningly, they do just that and are promptly arrested, but, subsequently released.

The audience slowly discovers that The Four Horsemen are modern day Robin Hood’s…taking from those who’s greed and avarice hurt so many people, and giving back to those people who were hurt.  Very interesting.

There is one major (and I mean MAJOR) surprise that I cannot reveal.  Go see the movie.

“Now You See Me” is a fun movie with a cool message, and it gives us (or at least me) hope that real magic does exist.  The magic is awesome and the cast is terrific.   It is fine for the whole family, no f-words that I remember.

Don’t look too close.

“Fast & Furious 6″ Movie Review

4-Watertowers ForCarol.com Movie Review(Fast Furious Sexy Fun)

-

-

Vin Diesel (as Dominic Toretto) personifies cool.  Paul Walker (as Brian O’Conner) is a changed man.  Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (as Hobbs) is ripped and pumped.  Michelle fast and furious 6Rodriguez  (as Letty) and Gina Carano (as Riley) are tough as nails and the two sexiest women in the movies. The rest of the cast fills in the gaps, making “Fast & Furious 6″….well…..fast furious sexy fun.   The sexy part is taken care of with Michelle and Gina (did I say that already?)  :-)

The team is back together (taken out of retirement in exile) at the request of Hobbs to try to stop a clone team of bad guys who seek a 3 inch computer chip worth billions.  This other team is tough, and there appears to be a traitor in their group….the long thought dead Letty.

What follows is fast and furious car chases, races, crashes, and unbelievable stunts.  Not to mention a tank.  Some of the stunts were absolutely breathtaking where the whole audience gasped.  Wow!

The action is mostly cartoon-ish so most of the family can see it.  There is at least one f-word, but, it is entirely appropriate.

We watched it in 2D and enjoyed it tremendously.  Don’t leave right away though as there is a sneak peek at a famous star to appear in Fast & Furious 7…one of my favorites.
