“Lara Croft: Tomb Raider” Movie Review

4-Watertowers ForCarol.com Movie Review(Exciting Action Thriller)

Lady Lara Croft (Angelina Jolie) practices fighting a robot in a simulated tomb in her house.  Because of the convergence of planets that only happens once every 5,000 years Lara will need all her skills.

lara croftWhile sleeping one night as the convergence is just starting, she hears a ticking clock. She finds that clock in a hidden room and breaks through the camouflage to the crux of the clock: The all seeing eye.

Not knowing exactly what this is, she seeks the advice of a trusted friend who puts her in touch with the Illuminati.  They need the seeing eye since it is a key to two parts of a triangle that when put together, at exactly convergence time, will grant the holder the ability to control time.

After the Illuminati steal the eye from her mansion, Lara finds a letter from her long lost dad (her real life dad, Jon Voight) tasking her with saving the world by destroying the triangle.

Off they go to far away lands and adventure.

After stealing one half of the triangle in Cambodia, Lara finds she needs the Illuminati (they now have the eye) and the Illuminati need Lara (because she has now acquired one half of the triangle).

An unlikely alliance forms as they head off to find the second triangle piece before the convergence.

“Lara Croft: Tomb Raider” is a fun “Indiana Jones” like movie with chills, thrills, adventure, and excitement. Angelina Jolie is terrific. Daniel Craig, before 007, has a medium sized part as a bad guy, sort of.  OK for kids even though there is at least one s*it word that I remember.

“Paul Blart Mall Cop 2″ Movie Review

3.5-Watertowers ForCarol.com movie reviews(Paul Blart in Las Vegas)

Six years after the events in the first movie, Paul Blart (Kevin paul blart mall cop 2James) lost his wife of six days (she divorced him) and his mother got hit by a milk truck while getting the morning paper. His daughter, Maya (Raini Rodriguez), is all he has left and she just found out she has been accepted to UCLA (but, she is afraid to tell him).

Since he saved the mall six years ago,he is at a low point in his life until he gets an invitation to attend the SOTA Conference in Las Vegas (a conference and exhibit for mall cops). Thrilled with the invitation, Paul and Maya go there and stay at the Wynn.

So do a gang of bad guys looking to steal the valuable art work in the Wynn.

Maya stumbles into the Presidential Suite where the bad guys are planning the heist. They kidnap her and her new boyfriend, Lane (David Henrie).  Maya calls her dad and Paul Blart Mall Cop is called into action.

“Paul Blart Mall Cop 2″ is way better than I thought it would be. Funny, action packed (mostly slapstick) with a decent plot. Paul Blart is not as bumbling as he was in the first movie, in fact, he gave a pretty awesome Keynote speech for the Conference and did a fine job knocking out the gang members. BUT….it was written by Kevin James and produced by Adam Sandler, sooooooo, don’t expect Oscar winning performances. Do expect slightly stupid comedy with some poignant moments, and you won’t be disappointed.  No f-words, good for the whole family. By the way, Kevin James is a damn good on that Segway.

“The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” Movie Review

4-Watertowers ForCarol.com Movie Review(Exuberant, Exotic, Existent)

Sonny (Dev Patel) has done well with his original old folks home and is hoping to expand or maybe franchise.

second best featuredHe and Muriel (Maggie Smith) travel to San Diego to meet with possible investors.  Since Sonny is mercurial (in a good way) Muriel wants to do the talking.  But she is acerbic and does not hold back complaining about tea and “piss water” that was served to them. Not the perfect team to pitch an idea to investors, but, they get to the next step.

Returning home with the knowledge that a secret person will be visiting the hotel to see if the investment is a good one they continue with life at the Marigold Hotel, including Sonny and Sunaina’s (Tina Desai) wedding.

One day, two people check in.  Lavinia Beech (Tamsin Greig) is scoping the hotel out for her mother, and Guy Chambers (Richard Gere) is there to write his book on aging.  Sonny latches on to Guy treating him like royalty, while he ignores Lavinia.

“The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” is a smooth continuation from the first movie, so it might be worth your time to re-watch that first.  We did not, and we had a hard time remembering where some of the cast members were in their lives.

There are some ominous signs concerning Muriel that are not resolved in this movie.

I see a third movie coming, but, it better be soon…..the cast is old….that is why Sonny takes roll-call every morning.

“Get Hard” Movie Review

3.5-Watertowers ForCarol.com movie reviews(Rude, Crude, Funny)

James (Will Ferrell) is living the good life.  He is a financial wizard who just got a partnership in his firm, he has a beautiful wife, lives in a mansion, and has a staff to take care of his every need.

get hardThat all comes crashing down when Federal Marshals raid a party he is hosting and arrest him for various financial crimes. Knowing he is innocent, and trusting the judicial system, James does not take a plea preferring to go to court. Oooops. James is found guilty, and sentenced to 10 years in San Quentin by a judge who is fed up with Wall Street types getting off easy while others suffer.

He has 30 days to get his affairs in order.

Darnell (Kevin Hart) owns a small time car cleaning service that washes cars in the building that James works.  He wants to move to a better house and school district, but his credit sucks. He needs $30,000 to get a new mortgage on a better house.

James assumes that Darnell has been to prison and asks him to help him survive in San Quentin….he needs to “Get Hard”. Darnell has never been to prison, but, decides to help him “Get Hard”……for $30,000.

They spend most of the 30 days getting hard rather than trying to find out who did this to James. Most of the days….not all. Does justice prevail?  It is worth the cost of the rental and 2 hours of your life to find out.

“Get Hard” is a better movie than I expected. Kevin Hart and Will Ferrell make a good comedy team. You should know by now how much we love Kevin Hart…he does not disappoint. Lots of play on the words “Get Hard” and even more prison jokes about sucking dick, getting dicked, etc etc.  Not for kids.

“The Boxtrolls” Movie Review

3.5-Watertowers ForCarol.com movie reviews(Intolerance Misplaced, Visually Stunning)

“The Boxtrolls” live underground only venturing topside at night when the citizens of the city are sleeping.

boxtrollsThey pick garbage looking for treasures that can be made into gadgets, then, when the night is done, they gather in their underground lair, pile on top of one another, and sleep. They harm no one, but, the people who live topside have been led to believe that the boxtrolls are monsters that kidnap and eat people.

Archibald Snatcher (Ben Kingsley) is a lowly Boxtroll exterminator: He wears a red hat, but aspires to wear the ultimate status symbol…. a white hat. At night he grabs as many Boxtrolls as he can, ostensibly to exterminate them. Interestingly, the Boxtrolls continue life without their comrades as if nothing happened. Over the years, the Boxtroll population dwindles to a precious few. The job nearly complete, Archibald prepares for his white hat by eating cheese which it turns out he is horribly allergic to.

A human boy, Eggs (Isaac Hempstead Wright) was “taken” by the Boxtrolls as an infant and raised by them (the citizens topside think he was kidnapped and eaten). At 10 years of age, he ventures topside and is befriended by a young girl, Winnie (Elle Fanning) who’s father is in the upper class: He wears a white hat, eats cheese, and, unfortunately makes poor decisions where the city’s money will be spent.

After Winnie and Eggs connect….the whole world changes and the real monsters are unveiled.

“The Boxtrolls” is visually stunning. Although a bit confusing in the beginning the story it, eventually, comes together providing a nice moral story about who you are as a person irregardless of the status symbols you own or what you look like. The movie is quite violent so I don’t think it is good for little kids. No f-words.

“Labor Day” Movie Review

4-Watertowers ForCarol.com Movie Review(Prison Escapee Finds Love)

Adele (Kate Winslet) is suffering from depression since her husband, labor dayGerald (Clark Gregg), left her because she can no long have kids. Her teenage son, Henry (Gattlin Griffith), stays with her and helps her cope with her depression.

One day while shopping, Henry wanders off in the store to look at something and is approached by a bleeding man, Frank (Josh Brolin). Frank needs a ride….to their house…so he can rest for a few hours while his leg, which he hurt in a fall, gets better.

Only one problem: Frank is a prison escapee.

Although fearful of Frank at first, Henry and Adele soon find out that Frank is a decent guy wrongly accused of murder. Over the 5 day long Labor Day weekend, Frank fixes the car, cleans the furnace, teaches Henry how to play baseball, how to cook, and shows Adele what it is like to be loved.

But, Frank is a convicted killer on the run, and the authorities are bound to catch up.  Or do they?

“Labor Day” is a powerful movie with a stupendous cast. Kate Winslet, Josh Brolin, and Gattlin Griffith make an unbeatable trio. The narrator is Henry as an adult, Tobey Maquire.

“Adventureland” Movie Review

3.5-Watertowers ForCarol.com movie reviews(Games, Rides, Life)

adventurelandJames (Jesse Eisenberg) graduated from college and is looking forward to going to graduate school in New York City. Unfortunately, the families financial situation has changed dramatically and he is forced to figure out a way to make his own money to get there.

Looking for work for the summer, he finds that his degree is virtually useless in the summer job market. Seeking work at a local amusement park, he is hired immediately in the “Games” department.

James meets Em (Kristen Stewart) and falls in love. Unfortunately, Em is jumping in the sack on a regular basis with the married handyman at the park, Connell (Ryan Reynolds). Sexy Lisa P. (Margarita Levieva, who was the fake Amanda Clarke on Revenge) goes out with James confusing the situation even more.

But friends are made and life lessons learned, all-in-all, an interesting and, unexpectedly, fruitful summer job.

“Adventureland” is a fun movie depicting real life struggles and issues. Lots of drug use and drinking so it is not for kids.

“About Last Night” Movie Review

ForCarol.com Movie Review 3-Watertowers(Sex, Kevin Hart, More Sex)

Bernie (Kevin Hart) just met a hot, fiery, very sexually active woman, Joan (Regina Hall). Their relationship is new and volatile.  They argue, make up, argue, argue, make up, yell, have wild sex, breakup, get back together, scream…….VERY volatile.

about last nightJoan brings her roommate, Debbie (Joy Bryant) to meet Bernie’s best friend, Danny (Michael Ealy). Both are subdued (hell, Attila the Hun is subdued compared to Kevin Hart) but hit it off and spend the first night together in bed (how come that never happened to me?). But it is more than just sex, they truly enjoy each others company even out of bed, or where ever.

While Bernie and Joan are off and on, off and on…..Debbie and Danny stay together even though they are both tiring of the relationship. The magic is gone. Instead of sex everyday, it becomes sex every other day, and as we all know, eventually, every month, then every year, then, like the SF Giants, every other year…..haha, just kidding?

“About Last Night” IS Kevin Hart. His comedic talent shines above all else and he carries the movie. One part was REALLY cool, in a sneaky / subtle kind of way:  Debbie and Danny were watching an old movie on TV and she says “This is my favorite movie”.  I looked up the stars, Rob Lowe and Demi Moore, starring together. The movie was……”About Last Night”.  VERY COOL!

F-words fly, simulated sex is rampant, drinking, cussing, and fighting. Not for kids, and not Oscar worthy, but, if you like Kevin Hart as much as we do….worth the price. He is “cluckin f**kin” awesome. What a talent.

“The DUFF” Movie Review

3.5-Watertowers ForCarol.com movie reviews(Bullying & Owning Who You Are)

Bianca (Mae Whitman) has been hanging with her best friends, Casey (Bianca A. Santos) and Jessica (Skyler Samuels), for a long time.

the duffOne day, her next door neighbor, Wesley (Robbie Amell), innocently told Bianca that of her friend group, she is the DUFF (Designated Ugly Fat Friend). She is the one guys go to to find out more about beautiful Jessica and Casey…..because DUFF’s are approachable and not threatening.

Realizing she is indeed a DUFF, Bianca tries to change.  She dumps her best friends and recruits Wesley to help her change. Ultimately, she learns that true friends are hard to find, and that she is who she is and she needs to learn how to “own it”.

“The DUFF” starts out looking like a “Mean Girls” re-done, but, quickly modernizes the premise with cyber-bullying, along with the normal “Mean Girl” high school bullying, and shows how Bianca deals with bullying and rises above it.  Some F-words and S-words. Teens would like it, but it is not for little kids.

“Pain & Gain” Movie Review

2.5-Watertowers ForCarol.com Movie Review(Bumbling Bodybuilders)

Daniel Lugo (Mark Wahlberg) is a con-man body builder fresh out of pain & gainjail.

He gets a job as a personal trainer at a local gym and does a great job building business.

But he wants more. He desperately wants to be rich.

Training a rich businessman and asshole, Victor Kershaw (Tony Shalhoub), Daniel hatches a plan to kidnap Victor and hold him until he signs over his assets to Daniel and his loser bodybuilder associates; Paul (The Rock) and Adrian (Anthony Mackie).

The three bumbling bodybuilders find it difficult to kidnap Victor, then find it even more difficult to get him to sign over his assets, and, lastly, find it impossible to kill him…..despite numerous attempts.

The three muscle bound schmucks live high on the hog off of Victors assets….for awhile. Adrian, who suffers from steroid-induced erectile dysfunction, marries Robin (Rebel Wilson), Paul cokes out, while Daniel becomes more and more violent.

The “Victor” money runs out and they have to plan another kidnapping.

This time they target and attempt to kidnap a porn mogul, but, this kidnapping ends with deadly &  gory results.

We watched “Pain & Gain” mainly because of Mark Walhberg (Ted 2 is coming up….). It was interesting, uniquely different, more violent than I expected, and, based on a true story. Dwayne Johnson does an amazing job depicting the decline of a person from sober to wacked-out coke head.

Go to IMDb for more information. We watched this on Netflix (Thanks, Ryan!) because Lori is still laid up with the damaging remnants of her recent broken leg and getting to the movies is a chore not yet worth attempting.

“Life of Crime” Movie Review

3.5-Watertowers ForCarol.com Movie Reviews(Kidnapping, No Ransom)

Frank Dawson (Tim Robbins) is a rich real estate mogul who is skimming $50,000 per month from his business.  He puts the money in an offshore account where he now has over one million dollars.

life of crimeFrank is married to Mickey (Jennifer Aniston) and is having an affair with Melanie (Isla Fisher).  He also has attracted the attention of a couple of bad guys who know his financial situation.

These bad guys kidnap Melanie and demand a ransom.  Unlucky for them, Frank tells them to go take a hike.  He has already filed for divorce, so no loss on his part.

“Life of Crime” is a fun movie with an interesting premise (kidnapping the wife….keep her because I don’t care) and a shocking twist at the end (unless you are like me and guessed it).

Not for kids, some brief nudity, and Isla is smokin….oh, never mind.

“In Your Eyes” Movie Review

4-Watertowers ForCarol.com Reviews College Scholarships(Telepathic Telepresence)

Note: This movie comes close to my technical specialty: video conferencing. Imagine, sometime in the future, being able to video conference (think, Skype) with anyone, anytime, anyplace just like they do here in the movie. And just using your brain and senses (sight, smell, hearing, touch)…..no equipment! Very cool.

Dylan (Michael Stahl-David) is sitting in class as a young boy in in your eyesNew Mexico. Suddenly, he sees himself going downhill on a sled. He sees the trees up ahead and is knocked out (falling off his chair in class) when the sled hits a tree. At the very same instant, Rebecca (Zoe Kazan) who was on the sled (in New Hampshire) is also knocked out.  Weird.

Many years pass and even though both have experienced unexplained circumstances in their lives, they both blew them off as their own weird issues.  One day, Rebecca is shopping and sees a truck coming at her.  She freaks out in the store (which looks like she is totally crazy) but, Dylan raises his head just in time to avoid a collision.

They realize they can talk to each other!  Weird.

“In Your Eyes” is a totally unique movie dealing with the ability of Rebecca and Dylan to communicate completely with each other (see, hear, feel, and smell) even though they are thousands of miles apart.

They become friends, then they become more.

Interesting movie.

“The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1″ Movie Review

4-Watertowers ForCarol.com Movie Review(The Districts Revolt)

Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) awakens to find herself in a hospital in District 13.

mockingjay part 1We learn that District 13 survived the Capital’s onslaught, years ago, by going underground. We also learn that they are warriors and that they have stored massive amounts of advanced weaponry. They are just waiting for the right time to attack the Capital.

Now is the right time…..and Katniss is their symbol of rebellion…..their “Mockingjay”…..their hope to unite the Districts in battle.

But Katniss is worried about Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) who is being held, tortured, and used as the spokesperson against rebellion, in the Capital. She is not the feisty, defiant, Katniss we know.

Something has to change or someone else has to become the “Mockingjay”.

Visiting District 12 and seeing the devastation of her home District brings Katniss back to reality, then she visits District 8 and witnesses first hand the brutality of the Capital.

She vows to symbolize the fight. And fight they do……then Part 1 ends.

“The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1″ is the beginning of the end of the trilogy. I did not read the third book, as I was told it was worse than book #2 and that one sucked. Overall….the movies are much much better than the books.

“Hector and the Search for Happiness” Movie Review

5(Spectacular, Touching, Thought Provoking)

Hector (Simon Pegg) is a psychiatrist. He has a successful practice, and a neat, tidy, personal life with his beautiful, intelligent, doting girlfriend, Clara (Rosamund Pike).

hector blog picOne day with a patient, Hector snaps.

He decides that he is not truly happy, and furthermore, he is not helping his patients achieve happiness either. He needs to find happiness, so he tells Clara he is going on a journey to find it. He hopes she is there when he returns.

She gives him permission to do whatever he needs to do, and gives him a diary to take notes, and off he goes on his life-affirming, worldwide, research project, not knowing when he will return. Along the way he finds new friends, visits old friends, and finds his happiness.

In China, he meets businessman Edward (Stellan Skarsgard) who introduces him to his version of happiness at a club and hires a hooker, Ying Li (Ming Zhao), to spend the night with Hector. Being un-wise to the world, Hector falls in love with Ying Li only to find out that her job was to be with him (“Happiness is loving two women at the same time”). Off to the mountains where he finds a Monastery where the monks are closed on Monday and have Skype!

He Skypes with Clara from the Monastary and then continues video conferencing with her for the rest of his journey.

In Africa, he meets up with an old friend, a Doctor helping the poor, Michael (Barry Atsma), and a drug cartel kingpin, Diego Baresco (Jean Reno). He helps Diego’s wife by prescribing less medication, and, unwittingly, his life is saved by his association with Diego.

In Los Angeles, Hector meets up with his first love, Agnes (Toni Collette) and happiness future Nobel Prize winner, Professor Coreman (Christopher Plummer). It is in LA that Hector finds his true happiness.

“Hector and the Search for Happiness” is a truly outstanding movie. Simon Pegg is brilliant. I do not understand how he was overlooked for an Oscar. I love the mix of animation and the list of research items on happiness (for example, “15. Listening is loving.”).

This is the best movie we have seen in a long time, and, it has moved directly into my top 10 of movies all time. Maybe top 5 after we watch it again…and again.

“Nine Months” Movie Review

ForCarol.com Movie Review 3-Watertowers(Overacted but Funny, Robin Williams shines)

Samuel (Hugh Grant) and Rebecca (Julianne Moore) have been dating for a long time.  Rebecca’s biological clock is ticking away, but, child psychologist Sam is oblivious to this new paradigm in this relationship. He still wants to play and be a kid, she wants him to grow up, get married, and have a family.

nine monthsBirth control is 97% effective. In Rebecca’s case, the 3% became 100%. She is pregnant. Sam is flabbergasted and has no clue what to do. So he does nothing.

“Nine Months” has a famous cast and famous director, Chris Columbus, who encourages the actors to go completely over the top. The only one that suits that mold is Robin Williams who, in his short time on screen, is absolutely hilarious. Robin Williams allowed to be Robin Williams….perfection….damn we miss him. The other actors are not as successful: Hugh Grant is not an over the top actor and Tom Arnold (who I normally like) is irritating as all get out. Julianne Moore and Jeff Goldblum keep it low key while Joan Cusack is ok over the top.

Rent it just to see Robin Williams do his thing.

“The Good Guy” Movie Review

ForCarol.com Movie Review 3-Watertowers(Lies, Betrayal, Relationships)

Tom (Scott Porter) comes to Beth’s (Alexis Bledel) apartment after losing his the good guywallet. He needs a place to stay for the night and to borrow some money. He can’t come up though because Alexis has someone with her, but, she does come down the stairs to give him some money and to tell him she is sorry.

We feel sorry for Tom as it appears he has been lied to and betrayed.

Six weeks earlier…..

We find out that Tom is a a hot shot Wall Street wheeler and dealer and has been dating Beth for a few months. They have not had sex yet and book lover Beth spends many nights alone or with her girl friends while Tom works.

One day at the bookstore, Beth meets fellow reader, Daniel (Bryan Greenberg), and there is an attraction. Little does she know that shy Daniel was just hired by Tom and is under his tutelage on the ways of Wall Street and women. Mostly women.

Beth invites Daniel to her weekly book club meeting, and, after some hesitation (and encouragement from Tom) he accepts.

“The Good Guy” is a somewhat interesting movie about relationships and how difficult it is to find the truth among the lies and deceit. Not for kids.
