Movie Review: “Air”

1984

Brash upstart Nike, caters to the running community by making running shoes that appeal to most runners of the time (except me….I liked, and still like, Saucony).

But Nike wanted to break into the basketball shoe business dominated by Converse and Adidas.

To help them in the basketball arena, Nike founder, Phil Knight (Ben Affleck) hired shoe salesman and basketball genius Sonny Vaccaro (Matt Damon) to find terrific high school players and offer them contracts to wear Nike shoes (and other gear).

No one is biting! Arrrghh.

At the time, a kid from North Carolina was tearing up the hardwood and everyone wanted him, but, the kid wanted Adidas…..and a red Mercedes.

Sonny decided to break the rules at the risk of his job, and meet directly with this kids mother, Deloris (Viola Davis), so he traveled to North Carolina (from Oregon) to meet with her on a surprise visit…..it is then that Sonny made his initial offer, and……

The rest is basketball history, thanks to Sonny, Marketing guru Rob Strasser (Jason Bateman), Shoe designer extrordinaire, Peter Moore (Matthew Maher), and Deloris, and, oh yeah, of course, the kid himself.

Peter, Sonny, Rob with the prototype sneaker that will change the world.

Who is that kid? Just think “Air …….” to yourself when it comes to sneakers, and you will know. 🙂

“Air” is a fantastic movie about…….well…….changing the world…..and having the guts and foresight to do just that. A new basketball mold was made and the old mold was broken back in 1984.
