Movie Review: “Rams”

In Australian sheep country, Colin (Sam Neill) and Les (Michael Caton) are brothers living next to each other, but…..have not spoken to each other in 40 years.

They are both sheep ranchers and each has a prize winning ram to show at the county fair.

After the winner is chosen, Colin notices some symptoms of a very dangerous disease in Les’s ram and he asks the vet, Kat (Rita Skeeter….err, Miranda Richardson) to take a look.

Sure enough….it’s that disease.

That means that every rancher in the valley must kill every sheep and ram, disinfect everything, then wait two years to start over.

Colin decides to kill his own animals and bury them in the land they grew up in…..and shoots them in the head.

Except for four…….but keeping them a secret is DIFFICULT!

“Rams” is a quirky low budget indie that is not really “fun” to watch. Heartwrenching decisions and death interspersed with humor and intense family drama, but, ultimately…..an affirmation of the power of……life.

Excellent cast, nice scenery, and stunningly beautiful sheep / rams.
