A recently married couple, Channing Tatum (as Martin Taylor) and Rooney Mara (as Emily Taylor), are forced to endure 4 years without each other as Martin is arrested for insider trading.
“Side Effects” starts as Martin is released from jail and he and Emily start a new life together. Unfortunately, Emily is suffering from severe depression which hampers their reunion and marriage.
After a suicide attempt, Emily is introduced to psychiatrist Dr. Jonathan Banks (played by Jude Law). He promises to help.
Settling on a relatively new medication (Ablixa) Emily finds that the side effects (sleep walking being one) are no worse than the depression and stays on it.
What happens after this I cannot say as it will totally ruin the movie.
“Side Effects” is a twisty turny plot that changes direction just when you think you have it figured out. Very cool. It earns it’s R rating with f-words, a brutal murder, and a very sex scene where the naked, bouncing, Rooney Mara rides Tatum thru the movies first mutually satisfying climax. Not for kids.
Jude Law is superb as are Rooney Mara and Channing Tatum. Catherine Zeta-Jones plays her part to perfection. A great cast and a great story that we talked about for hours after it was over….
Oh, the second mutually satisfying climax is the ending.
Although the one big twist is about as fun as the movie gets, that plot twist and the thirty or forty minutes leading up to it make this movie a worthwhile and, for the most part, enjoyable film to go see. Solid review Mike.

Thanks, Dan! 🙂
