(Surprisingly good, very funny)

Nothing I had seen leading up to watching the movie (the trailer, commercials, or pictures) did justice to the actual movie. What looked like a totally stupid movie in the marketing campaign, actually turned out to be a sweet, funny, movie about real life ups and downs. Fire the marketeers!
Bullied as a kid, Burt Wonderstone (played by Steve Carell) receives a Magic kit, with video, for his birthday (which he spends alone….even making his own birthday cake). Magic sparks his imagination and changes his life. He meets Anton Marvelton (Steve Buscemi) and the rest is magic history.
After 10 years headlining in Las Vegas the Burt and Anton magic act is stale. Ticket sales are way down and they lose their job. Anton moves on, giving magic kits to kids in third world countries (who really need food and water) while Burt spirals down to entertaining at an old folks home and birthday parties.
What happens then? Well…..you will have to go see the movie. Needless to say it is surprisingly VERY good and VERY funny. The guy sitting next to us was cracking up loudly and often. 🙂
The cast is terrific including the two Steve’s, Jim Carrey who is understated but still Jim Carrey, Olivia Wilde, James Gandolfini and the incomparable Alan Arkin.
No f-words that I recall. Good for kids with some oddly self destructive “magic” tricks that make you cringe even though they are not graphic. Don’t leave too early (as mr. laugher did) , as they show a hilarious clip on how Burt and Anton’s grandest illusion is accomplished.
Go to IMDb for more information. We watched this at the Tracy, CA CineMark where our poster is still up!
