The Mandarin (played by the remarkable Ben Kingsley) is a terrorist. He uses genetically altered humans as explosive weapons (bombs) and is threatening millions, including the President of the United States.
Happy Hogan (Tony Stark’s loyal bodyguard, played by Jon Favreau) is a victim of one Mandarin-planned bombing. A good way to piss off Stark (we all who plays Tony Stark…Robert Downey Jr.) who gives his home address and vows revenge…..good old fashioned revenge.
The Mandarin, however, wastes no time laying waste to Stark’s home nearly killing the love of his life Pepper Potts (played by Gwyneth Paltrow), himself, and a visitor (and one night stand many years ago) Maya Hansen (played by Rebecca Hall).
During the battle, Stark ends up in a small town in Illinois (I think..) where he believes the first Mandarin bombing occurred. There, he befriends a young nerd, Harley Keener (played by Ty Simpkins) and battles more genetically altered humans.
“Iron Man 3” is smoother than the previous two (in my opinion) and as such is (to me) a better story. It is funny and action packed with surprising twists. The computer graphics is outstanding and the holographic technology that shows Stark interacting with Jarvis (the computer, voiced by DaVinci Code alum, Paul Bettany)) is terrific. It is fine for the whole family, but, the violence may be a bit much for the youngest. No f-words. The action / violence is not graphic.
Oh…Stark totally mis-uses the term ISDN at one point…very funny for those of us who helped develop ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) way back in the dark ages at AT&T Bell Labs….
Stay all the way thru the credits….only six of us did (out of a packed theater) and we were rewarded with a funny skit, and a written promise (so don’t look away from the screen).
