One day five teenage boys tackle the Golden Mile: A twelve pub walk drinking a pint at each pub. They never made it to the end, but, had a wonderful time.
Years later, four of them are moderately successful adults while the leader of the pack, Gary King (Simon Pegg), is pretty much living in the past. That day, years ago, which was supposed to be the launching point for a wonderful life, was, in fact, the pinnacle of his life.
Gary once again wants the feeling of being invincible, so he organizes another Golden Mile visit with his, now much older, buddies. They go along, although somewhat reluctantly.
Walking the Golden Mile, and visiting the old pubs, they eventually realize something is wrong. The people who used to know them, no longer do, and the place seems odd….changed. In a fight in the bathroom, Gary finds out that most of the people in town are robots with blue ink-like blood. WTF.
He is determined to reach “The World’s End” pub this time. But they have to fight aliens to get there.
I really do not understand this movie. At first I thought it was a mid-life crises movie where these near 40 somethings finally realize that the exuberance and over confidence of youth is no longer with them (life does beat you into submission). Then I thought it was a commentary on technology and how it is changing the world (sometimes not for the better).
Ultimately, I just was confused. Let me know what you think in the comments below
