Sometimes Adam Sandler gives you stupid. Sometimes he gives you a really good movie. “Blended” is the latter: A low key (for the most part) comedy about two single parents trying to do the best for their kids….99% of the time.
On a blind date, Sandler (as Jim) takes Drew Barrymore (Lauren) to Hooters. Neither is having a good time and Lauren arranges an emergency cell phone call to get her out of this. Jim’s call comes first and the date ends. (By the way, the reasons for how Jim handles situations come to light during the movie, very touching, and very well done by Sandler.)
Going to the store one night to buy tampons for his 15 year old daughter, Jim sees Lauren buying a magazine for her horny teen son. They trade items and pay. Problem is, their credit cards get mixed up and they have to see each other again. One thing leads to another and both families end up on the same dream African adventure.
“Blended” is a really good, fun, movie. Sandler is sooo good when he is low key (he is good when he is being stupid too, but, that is a matter of taste), and Barrymore is always wonderful. As for Adam Sandler “stupid”…there is a small African choir following the couple around lead by Terry Crews (as Nickens). That bit is both funny and….well…..stupid. The supporting cast is terrific. No Rob Schneider cameo. 😦
Go to IMDb for more information. We watched this at the Tracy, CA CineMark where the audience, for the 3rd week in release, was way larger than I expected. Judging by the audience reaction, they loved the movie.
