“The Rewrite” Movie Review
Keith Michaels (Hugh Grant) is pitching his screenplay ideas around Hollywood. Since he is an Oscar winning screenwriter, the movie producers listen to his pitch, but, reject his ideas. They want new blood and they want a “kick-ass female lead”.
Michaels’s agent finds him a job in Binghamton University (Upstate NY) teaching a writing class. Teaching? As far as Michaels is concerned teaching is for losers who can’t succeed in life, but, it pays the bills, so he accepts….vowing to himself that he will simply skate by until something better comes along.
At the University, the prospective students for his class had to submit a 30 page screenplay. Since Michaels is, in his mind, a “big shot” from Hollywood he figures he can skip the formalities of teaching and chooses the class by how beautiful they are…..with a couple of ugly nerd guys thrown in. No reading of screenplays required.
Michaels quickly runs afoul of a particularly uptight Professor (played by Allison Janney) and falls in love with a student (Marisa Tomei), and surprise surprise…..teaching.
“The Rewrite” is an enjoyable movie even though it is predictable. No f-words that I remember, and one of my all time favorites is in it: Chris Elliott. Hugh Grant is as droll as ever, and, in this part….it works.
