Alex Sheldon (Luke Wilson) needs to finish his latest book in 30 days or the thugs who lent him gambling money will kill him.
While pressuring Alex, the thugs burned his laptop computer. With no money and no computer, Alex hires a stenographer, Emma Dinsmore (Kate Hudson) to type while he dictates. She agreed to wait for payment until after he gets the book money. How nice.
As they write the book, Emma makes comments which are not initially appreciated by Alex and the movie cuts to live action of the book which is very cool.
Set in 1924 on a fictional island much like Newport, Adam (also Luke Wilson) a tutor, meets and falls in love with the beautiful Polina Delacroix (Sophie Marceau). He also meets, and falls in love with, Yiva, Elsa, Eldora, and Anna all the same person (as they write, he re-writes the part of the au pair) all overacted by Kate Hudson.
In the real world….together, over the span of 30 days, Emma and Alex finish the book and……oh, I do not want to ruin it for you.
“Alex & Emma”, much like a book, starts out slowly as it builds the characters, but, ends up interesting and heartwarming. OK for kids, but, they won’t like it. I only wish Kate Hudson would break into that big, Goldie Hawn, smile….she does not, even though she comes close.
Worth the rental fee and 2 hours of your time. Directed by Rob Reiner which in my book means it will be good (same goes for Ron Howard, JJ Abrams, Chris Columbus and a few others)
