Guy Trilby (Jason Bateman) is a 40 year old proofreader in a kids spelling bee. The rules state that a spelling bee contestant needs to have not graduated from 8th grade before 20011. Well…..he never graduated from 8th grade, so he is spelling bee eligible. How funny….a loop hole. Furthermore, he is sponsored by media (as required in the rules); a blogger who he has sex with (Jenny Widgeon played by Kathryn Hahn).
He is a great speller and has years and years of experience as a proofreader to back him up. The parents of the spelling bee contestants hate him as do the administrators of the bee. They want him gone, and in some cases, conspire to make sure he is gone. But….he prevails and even makes a 10 year old friend, Chaitanya Chopra (Rohan Chand) whose parents are, in my opinion, dip-shits.
“Bad Words” is unique fun. Guy achieves his ultimate goal, but, not in the way he originally envisioned. Jason Bateman is great. Not for kids as there is sex, f-words, and underage drinking.
