“Focus” Movie Review
Nicky (Will Smith) was conned by Jess (Margot Robbie). Thing is…he knew it was a con and followed through with it because he was curious. He was not impressed.
Before he leaves the hotel, he teaches Jess a few tricks of the trade and she asks to join him. He “hires” her and introduces her to his people and operation when they are in New Orleans for the Super Bowl. The pickings are easy and in a few short days, the team steals $1.2 million from unsuspecting football fans.
On game day, one of his employees gives Nicky the $1.2 million to hang on to with the admonition “Do not gamble!”. At the game, he and Jess arrive at the luxury suite where they promptly make small $1.00 bets with each other. Overhearing this friendly betting is the owner of the suite, Liyuan (BD Wong), who wants to get in on the action. Nicky agrees and he and Liyuan quickly escalate the bets until Nicky loses the entire $1.2 million.
What an idiot….or is he?
“Focus” is a fascinating look at the life, and business, of a conman. The story dragged a bit as it setup the story, but, once it got rolling it was engaging with a delightfully SHOCKING ending. Will Smith and Margot Robbie are both excellent with lots of chemistry. Not for kids.
