Barry Egan (Adam Sandler) is a single small business owner with serious mental issues….and seven sisters who seem to treat him rather badly.
In one plot line: One night, Barry calls a sex phone service. They ask him for his home address, credit card number, social security number….most of which are unnecessary, but, Barry is lonely and wants to talk to someone, so he gives them his information. All of it. (NOTE: NEVER give anyone your SSN, they do not need it.) That talk turns in a horrible adventure for Barry as the sex-line sends thugs to steal, threaten, then physically attack him to extort as much money as they can. Eventually, they threaten his life.
In another plot line, one of his sisters introduces Barry to her friend, Lena Leonard (Emily Watson). The attraction is apparent and Barry has to spend a lot of time convincing her he is not as weird as the sisters say he is. Trouble is…..he is.
“Punch-Drunk Love” is not your typical goofy Adam Sandler movie. It is deadly serious, weird, and uncomfortable to watch (made even more psychotic considering Sandler’s goofy smile and voice). Sandler is truly an amazing actor who chooses goofy over serious (I am going to review “The Cobbler” here soon, another serious Sandler), but, when he does serious…people listen. He won a Golden Globe for this role. Not for kids.
