“The Huntsman: Winter’s War” Movie Review

4-Watertowers ForCarol.com Movie Review(Ice Princess Trains Huntsmen)

Before watching this movie….watch the first one again. Here is my review of “Snow White and the Huntsman“.

After re-watching the first movie we had no idea that Ravenna (Charlize Theron) had a sister, Freya (Emily Blunt), who helped her conquer kingdoms and kill kings. Oddly, there is no mention of the brother who helped her in the first movie….I guess he was not worth mentioning….loser.

Before the Events of the first Movie

the huntsman 1Freya seems nice enough, but, she is worried that her magic has yet to show.

She falls in love, has a baby and is expecting to live happily ever after with the father of her baby, and newborn.

As she was going out to meet the father the baby is murdered, ostensibly by the father. Freya in her grief, did a quick freeze on the murderer, then blew him apart. Freya’s power has emerged….she is now the Ice Queen.

Freya moves north (where else do Ice Queens live?), where she and her army plunder villages, killing the adults and taking the kids. The kids are then trained to become the finest army and most lethal killers the world has ever seen: The Huntsmen.

Sara (Jessica Chastain) and Eric (Chris Hemsworth) are two of the kidsthe huntsman 2 turned killers. They are now grown up, in love, and the best of the Huntsmen.

After the Events of the First Movie

Snow White is the Queen after killing Ravenna. The Huntsman / Eric has completed his tasks and is now searching for the magic mirror that has been stolen. That mirror (mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest……) is evil and Snow White wants it put away safely, so it’s powers cannot effect anyone, including her.

But, Queen Freye wants the mirror….and will kill / freeze anyone to get it.

To see what happens…..you need to watch the movie.

“The Huntsman: Winter’s War” is much better than we expected. The plot even makes sense (the critics can go pound sand, as they do not not explain the plot twists at all while dissing a good movie). Hemsworth, Chastain, and Blunt carry the movie and it is exciting, funny, has an interesting plot, and great computer graphics. Ok for the older kids as there is cartoonish violence and some tame sex.

To be clear: Snow White is alive, but, only makes one very brief appearance, and, no, it is not Kristen Stewart.

Go to IMDb for more information.  We watched this at the Tracy, CA CineMark theater.
