In 1978, Big Stone Gap, VA was a small Appalachian town where coal was king and everyone knew everyone else.

Ave Maria Mulligan (Ashley Judd) just turned 40 and is officially an “old maid”. Her friends think it is about time she settled for anyone and got married. But, Ave is still being choosy as she stays single, and busy, running the family pharmacy.
Knowing that Ave might be getting desperate……the guys are chasing. Jack MacChesney (Patrick Wilson), seems to have the inside track even though he has been rebuffed, more than once, by the persnickety Ave Maria.
After her mother dies, Ave finds out that she was not her father’s biological child as her mother was pregnant when she met him. Armed with this new knowledge, Ave’s aunt and uncle try to secure the family house, and business, claiming that Ave is “not a blood relative”.
“Big Stone Gap” is a comfortable easy going small town coal country drama, with a powerful cast: Ashley Judd, Patrick Wilson, Whoopi Goldberg, Jenna Elfman, and Jane Krakowski to name a few. OK for kids, but, seriously….they won’t like it.
