“Black or White” Movie Review
Elliot (Kevin Costner) and Carol (Jennifer Ehle) Anderson adopt their 17 year old daughter’s baby after she dies during childbirth. The father, Reggie (Andre Holland), is a drug addict with no interest in raising the child.
Elliot is in mourning, drinking heavily, but, still taking care of Eloise the best he can (he is a lawyer with enough money to take time off from work) when Reggie’s mother, Rowena Jeffers (Octavia Spencer), decides to sue for custody (thinking that Elliot cannot possibly be both a mother and a father to Eloise).
Not wanting Reggie anywhere near Eloise, Elliot’s law firm sets up a defense team including good friend, Rick (Bill Burr), who advises Elliot to stop drinking.
The ensuing court battle and Reggie’s return (to ask for money from Elliot so he can leave for good) threaten to alienate both families which, until then, had gotten along just fine.
“Black or White” is a terrific, very emotional, movie. Make sure you have tissue handy and are in a good mood. Costner, Spencer, and Estell are wonderful.
