“Irrational Man” Movie Review

Abe Lucas (Joaquin Phoenix) is a highly respected professor of philosophy. He is starting a new job at Braylin College in Rhode Island and his arrival is highly anticipated by faculty and students alike.

Abe’s reputation proceeds him: He is brilliant, a womanizer, a drunk, and, unknown to others, severely depressed.

At Braylin, Chemistry professor, Rita Richards (Parker Posey), sees a chance to escape from her loveless marriage and have a torrid affair with the brilliant new professor. They try, but, depression rules his ability to function.

Student, Jill Pollard (Emma Stone), is likewise attracted to the brooding Abe and they become friends and confidants.

Abe’s depression is worsening until he finds a purpose in life…..to kill someone.

Suddenly, he is happy, his sex life improves greatly, then…..he decides he has to kill again.

“Irrational Man” starts out very slowly but builds in interest until the final shocking seconds. Directed by Woody Allen. Not for kids.
