Sam Wexler (Josh Radnor), a successful short story writer in New York City, is now struggling to sell a novel. He is not having much success.
Sam’s cousin and artist, Mary Catherine (Zoe Kazan), and her boyfriend, Charlies (Pablo Schreiber), are struggling with an unexpected pregnancy and struggling to decide whether to move from NYC to LA, or not.
Possible love interest for Sam, Mississippi (Kate Mara), is struggling to make a living serving drinks in a bar in NYC while pursuing a cabaret singing career at night.
Young Rasheen (Michael Algieri) is struggling to find a foster home. He finds a true friend in Sam, who does not realize that taking a a kid into his home is only slightly weird and, by the way, is against the law.
The key word in all the above is “struggling”. Everyone in this touching, very good, movie is struggling. Nothing is easy as real-life struggles persist. Only adults, who understand the struggles, will like it.
