Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) is an Economics Professor at NYU. She is not only brilliant, but, also great at games of chance, and, oh yeah, she has been dating this guy Nick (Henry Golding) for a a bit over a year.
Nick is going to be best man for his friend’s wedding in Singapore and he asks Rachel to come with him so she can meet his family and visit with her BFF from college, Peik Lin (Awkwafina).
She agrees to go, and, when they board the plane, Rachel finds out that Nick is not who she thinks. Happy to be in economy, Rachel is shocked to find out that they will spend the flight in their own private suite (they have that?)…..and that Nick’s family is kinda filthy rich.
Arriving in Singapore, Rachel finds out that not only is Nick’s family rich, but, so is Peik Lin’s. Rachel is thrust into a world where, as a poor working class Asian-American, raised by a single mother, she is not at all accustomed. And, to make matters worse, some of Nick’s super rich family members are not at all welcoming.
But, hey, Rachel is from New York, she can handle anything. 🙂
“Crazy Rich Asians” is a terrific romance comedy…..the perfect antidote for these dark and hateful times. Directed with abandon and glee, this is a movie we will buy and watch many times over. It is THAT good, that satisfying, that funny, that poignant. The entire cast is fantastic, but, the movie truly SPARKLES when Awkwafina is on camera. She is amazing, absolutely amazing.
PS: “Crazy Rich Asians” is like a Hallmark movie, but, on steroids. 🙂
