“Shazam!” Movie Review

Billy Batson / Shazam! (Asher Angel / Zachary Levi) has run away from 23 foster homes. He is still underage and has to stay in the system until he is 18 years old.

He is paired with a couple who run a foster home with six foster kids. One of those kids, Freddy (Jack Dylan Grazer), is disabled and, more importantly a superhero nerd. Invisibility is his favorite superpower.

Billy and Freddy hit it off and become friends. Billy also likes this foster home and it looks like his world is finally turning around.

Little does he know just home much his world is going to turn around, as the last Wizard (Djimon Hounsou) in charge of guarding the 7 deadly sins (pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath, and sloth) is getting old and is seeking a person true-of-heart to take his place to defend humankind against the 7 evils. He finds Billy…..

Shazam!

Only one problem, Dr. Sivana (Mark Strong) has spent his whole life trying to find the aging, weak, Wizard and steals the 7 deadly sins for himself (he was rejected by the Wizard as a kid for not being pure of heart….and has been angry ever since).

Dr. Sivana becomes the second most powerful being in the world.

Guess who the most powerful is? Yup….but not quite yet.

Taking advantage of Shazam! being a kid, and just learning the extent of his powers, Dr. Sivana tries to steal Shazam’s powers so he can be the most powerful being in the world.

Does he succeed?

To see what happens, you will have to see the movie. 😉

“Shazam!” is totally not what I expected. Monsters (the 7 deadly sins), fighting, death, and a few “shit” words made this a more intense movie than I was expecting. It is also very funny and heartwarming. What an achievement! NOTE: Wonder Woman is still the best and Aquaman is still a bit better.

Stay after the movie! The first credit scene hints about the next Shazam! while the last credit scene (which I was the only one in the theater to see) was funny, very funny.
