Even though his family rejects music, Miguel (Anthony Gonzalez), has music in his blood.
He idolizes the most famous musician / singer to ever live: Ernesto de la Cruz (Benjamin Bratt). In fact, he has a memorial set-up that his family can never see…..and he has a guitar that he taught himself to play.
And….he plays and sings really really well. Music is, after all, in his blood.

But, alas, he cannot pursue his musical dreams because his long dead great great grandfather (who is headless in the picture) left his wife and baby girl, Coco, to give the world his music…never to return.
Starting from that moment, the family was in the shoe-making business and music was banned!
Generations later…..Miguel wants to pursue music and is going to defy his family and play at the Day of the Dead celebration.
Trying to borrow the guitar from Ernesto’s grave, Miguel instead is taken to the Land of the Dead where he meets his family and weirdo Hector (Gael Garcia Bernal). Not getting his musical wish from his great great grandmother, he then seeks out Ernesto so he can grant him access back to the world of the living WITH the gift of being able to pursue music.
Well……he finds Ernesto, but, things do not go as planned.
To see what happens, you will have to stream “Coco” on Disney+
We hesitated watching “Coco” because, well, we try to avoid sad stories since the world is sad enough with the orange twitter twit in charge and now a pandemic, but, surprise surprise: “Coco” was fun, uplifting, colorful, and thoughtful. Wow! A truly great movie.
