
Five years after the Civil War ended, Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd (Tom Hanks) makes a meager living by travelling from backwoods town to backwoods town reading the newspapers, for a dime, to the local residents.
It is quite exciting and the town’s people seem to really enjoy his reading of the news.
After leaving one town, Captain Kidd stumbles upon a broken carriage…..and blood……everywhere.
Following the trail of blood, he finds a man hanging in the tree, dead.
Spotting movement in the nearby bushes, Captain Kidd sees that a little girl is running away from him. He chases her down and finds some paperwork stating that her name is Johanna (Helena Zengel) and she was being transported to her remaining family, and aunt and uncle, in Castroville.
Turns out……Johanna (she tells Captain Kidd that her name is Cicada) was taken six years ago by the Kiowa people after they raided her home and murdered her parents.
Now, six years later, Johanna only speaks Kiowa and considers herself Kiowan.
The authorities are unwilling to help, so Captain Kidd takes it upon himself to return Johanna to her relatives, and…….

“News of the World” is an exciting, tense, adventure / western with stunning scenery and a great cast. No slobbering dog, no smiling soccer ball, and no toys that come to life, and he is not lost. 😉
