Three kids are given their last Christmas gifts from their late mother.
Clara (Mackenzie Foy) received the most interesting and puzzling gift: A card from mom that says everything Clara will need is inside the fancy metal egg she was given.
But….there is no key!!
Clara is a a mechanical wizard, but, even she could not open the lock on the egg when she sees that the egg was made by her Godfather, Drosselmeyer (Morgan Freeman).
Attending a Christmas ball at Drosselmeyer’s house, Clara asks him about the egg only to find out that, indeed, there is no key and that it is very hard to break into.
Duh.
When the gifts were handed out to the children, Clara found the rope that leads to her gift and follows it……and follows it……and follows it (hey, it’s a long rope!), ending at a tree in another realm with a key hanging in it, like an ornament.
But….before Clara can grab the key it is stolen by a mouse and……
