Movie Review: “Tetris”

At a Consumer Electronics Show, game programmer, Henk Rogers (Taron Egerton), saw, and played with, a game that blew him away!

Tetris.

Henk instantly saw the value and appeal of this game and purchased some of the rights to put Tetris in arcades and computers.

So he thought.

He visited Nintendo and saw……the prototype for the Gameboy.

He wanted the rights for Tetris for this awesome handheld device…..and that is when things got REALLY complicated.

Henk visted Russia where the developer, Alexey Pajitnov (Nikita Efremov), lived and they bonded (even going as far as making real-time changes to the software together….see picture below). But, Russia, being a communist country, had control of everything Alexey did and thought…..everything.

And the Russian authorities wanted the money that comes with licensing Tetris….all of it.

And would do anything to get it.

Then…..

Oh, to see what happens you can watch this movie on Apple TV +. 🙂

“Tetris” is a very interesting movie about how much effort, backstabbing, politics, and dishonesty went into getting Tetris to market in the U.S.

I for one am glad Henk had the fortitude to prevail as guess who purchased the original black and white game boy with Tetris on it? Yup…..ME!

I have no idea where it is today. If I find it, I’ll post a pic. 🙂

Henk was right about Gameboy and Tetris….a match made in heaven. 🙂
