The magical world of Harry Potter returns in this prequel set in 1926, 70 years before Harry, Ron, and Hermione, stepped foot in Hogwarts. If you do not remember, “Deathly Hallows” it might be a good time to re-read it, or re-watch the movie, as there is information in that book, or movie, that serves as a backstory to “Fantastic Beasts” (i.e. the story of Dumbledore, Grindelwald, and Aberforth as kids). See my Book Review of “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”.
Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) is visiting New York City to capture, and care for, a few fantastic beasts that can only be found in the U.S.A.
In his suitcase are several beasts that, unfortunately and hilariously, escape when his suitcase, and the suitcase of a No-Maj (the American term for Muggle), Jacob Kowalski (Dan Folger), are accidentally swapped.
Failing to obliterate Kowalski’s memory of the encounter, Newt is taken into custody by former Auror Popentina (“Tina”) Goldstein (Katherine Waterston) where he learns of an additional entity (a “beast”?) causing death and destruction in 1926 NYC.
That “beast” is added to the list of beasts Newt is now chasing, but, by doing so he falls into the cross-hairs of a very powerful, possibly dark, wizard….Graves (Colin Farrell).
“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” is a MAGICAL movie great for the whole family, but, especially great for Harry Potter fans of both the movies and the books.
As is typical of J.K. Rowling, there are TONS of little hints in this movie about where the next 4 movies will be headed, and how these movies tie into the original Harry Potter series. For example, Newt once dated a LeStrange….look up that name to see who is related, and Grindewald (Johnny Depp) and Dumbledore have a long history ending in 1945. Look that up! 🙂
Tolerance and kindness to others is an underlying theme. Eddie Redmayne is perfect as Newt.
I am looking forward to the next 4 movies, and will re-read “Deathly Hallows” starting…..now!
You can go to Pottermore for more background information. FYI….I am in Ravenclaw, my patronus is a White Stallion, and my wand is a 10 inch dogwood wand with unicorn hair core. 🙂
