Ivan (Sam Rockwell) is a silver back gorilla that was saved from poachers over 20 years ago.
Since Ivan was a baby, Mack (Bryan Cranston) has taken care of him, and, when Ivan got a bit too big for the house, Mack rented a nice space in a mall where, eventually, he put on a big top attraction featuring “the one and only IIIIIIvvvvvaaaaannnn”.
There are a number of other animals in the show including Ivan’s best friend, Bob (Danny DeVito, a stray dog).
The mall circus did really well……until recently. To try to attract more people, Mack purchased a baby elephant, Ruby (Brooklyn Prince), and business picked up.
One day, Julia (Ariana Greenblatt) gave Ivan some crayons and lo-and-behold….Ivan drew a picture.
Wow! A gorilla artist!
Business picked up again, even more than before, until Ivan drew pictures that lead everyone to understand he wanted to be free.
One thing lead to another, and…….oh, to see what happens, you will have to watch the movie on Disney+.
“The One and Only Ivan” is a fun movie that is both sad and happy, hopeful and discouraging. But, ultimately, it shows the love man and animal can have for each other.
It is based on a true story (see this Wikipedia page).
