Greg Wittle (Owen Wilson) is struggling at work. He is recently divorced and estranged from his daughter and son. His life is unraveling.
Greg spends his hours at work making intricate drawings of a fantastical location, with beautiful buildings and scenery, and one beautiful woman. He says these are his thoughts and he can’t seem to drive them away long enough to do his job.
Then he is fired….and kills his boss.
In the meantime, Greg’s daughter, Emily (Nesta Cooper), is trying to reach out to him by inviting him to her graduation festivities. He promises to go, but, she is not stupid and knows he is too far gone to ever show up.
After killing his boss, Greg heads across the street to a bar where he meets Isabel Clemens (Salma Hayek) and finds out that she has powers to control the people who are not “real” like him and her.
She also has drugs that help them control their environment, and even, a more powerful drug…..that takes them back to their home: The fantastical world of his thoughts.
And guess what? The drawing of the beautiful woman…..is Isabel!
WTF
Then the shit hits the fan and……
Oh, to find out what happens, you will have to watch the movie on Amazon Prime.
Spoilers and Theories Ahead Beware
“Bliss” is a weird tense movie about…..well……drug addiction and how it effects families, and the person taking the drugs. It gets really bad reviews, but, I think they are missing the point. To me, “Bliss” is a great, scary ass, movie showing us, the viewer, a disturbing look at addiction and how reality and fantasy collide within the individual…..from their perspective…..as they seek….bliss. We are watching the world from Greg’s mind, and it is severely fucked up by drugs.
Lots of folks are trying to figure out what the movie is about, including me, scroll your mouse (or finger?) over the next paragraph to see my spoiler theory:
Everything that happens, except for Emily, is in Greg’s own mind. Isabel, the fantastical world….everything is from his own “thoughts”.
