Movie Review: “Encanto”

Many years ago, the Madrigal family had to flee their home as an enemy approached.

The father gave his life to save his wife and three children, but, in the process a magical candle appeared that not only protected the family, but, also built a wonderful, magical home, protecting it with surrounding mountains and blessed each Madrigal newborn with powers beyond imagination.

Except for one.

Mirabel (Stephanie Beatriz) never got a magical power as the door that lead to this power shut-down just as her ceremony was about to start.

Years later, Mirabel is now an intelligent, strong willed, young woman with her own magical powers: Curiosity, intelligence, and optimisim.

Where the magically gifted in her family fail, Mirabel is there to pick them up and help them move on.

Then one day…..the magical house, and candle, start to falter. And, while the magically-gifted family members panic and deny the facts…..

Mirabel steps in to use her “magical” powers to……

Oh…..to see what happens, you can watch the movie on Disney+. 🙂

“Encanto” is a bit confusing as the musical numbers, although nice, are hard to hear and follow. Since they are meant to convey a lot of information about the plot, one viewing may not be enough to fully appreciate this movie (I will watch it again). On the other hand, it is, ultimately, a colorful moving story of a young woman without visible, or readily apparent, magical powers but who is magical and strong in her own way.

UPDATE: I watched it again and with captions turned on during the songs and at a few other points in the movie, enjoyed the story even more.

Mirabel rocks!
