Movie Review: “Young Woman and the Sea”

When she was young, Trudy Ederle (Daisy Ridley), was suffering from measles and her Doctor thought she might not survive.

Looking out her New York apartment window, she sees a ferry burning killing hundreds.

Her mother, Gertrude (Jeanette Hain), knew many of the people who died….just feet from shore……but, they were afraid to jump since they could not swim.

If Trudy survived the measles, Gertrude vowed to have Trudy and her younger sister, Meg (Tilda Cobham-Hervey) learn how to swim.

Trudy survived, and….

Both sisters learned to swim!

In fact, Trudy did so well, she was with the first women’s swim team in the 1924 Paris Olympics and took home multiple medals.

But Trudy was not content….she told her dad Henry (Kim Bodnia) that she was going to swim the 21 miles across the English Channel.

He said no, and she said she was not asking.

With many people (mostly men) wanting her to fail (woman, 1926, duh) she met channel veteran, Bill Burgess (Stephen Graham), who told her he would help her.

Burgess, Trudy

Then….
