“The Book Thief” Movie Review

3.5-Watertowers ForCarol.com movie reviews(Death, Destruction, Depressing)

You know you are in for a rough time when the opening credits and movie are narrated by Death himself.

the book thief blog“No one lives forever…..”.

Bummer….and I thought this was about books. I guess if you consider book burning by the Nazis, and book “borrowing” by our heroine, Liesel (Sophie Nelisse), I guess it is….sort of.

An older childless couple re expecting to adopt a boy and a girl in the late 1930’s. The boy dies on the way, but the girl, Liesel, finds a new home with a kindly father, Hans (Geoffrey Rush) and a “thunderous” mother, Rosa (Emily Watson).

Times are changing in Germany just prior to WWII as the Nazis are gaining strength…..controlling how people think and live. If you don’t join the Nazi party, are a Jew, or a communist, your world is about to get worse.

But some people are stronger than the Nazis…..

“The Book Thief” is a depressing movie, more about death and destruction than books. True, Liesel learns how to read while with Hans and Rosa, and “borrows” books by breaking into the Burgermeister’s house (his books were not burned) and reads them to a critically ill Jewish friend they are protecting.

But DEATH is always there…..and death always wins.

“Laggies” Movie Review

4-Watertowers ForCarol.com Movie Review(Keira Knightley)

Megan (Keira Knightley) has become disenchanted with her group of friends. They have been together since high school, but, now, as adults, the friends are making progress while Megan is lagging behind.

laggies blogWith an advanced degree in Family Therapy, Megan is waving a sign on the street for her CPA father. She has no future goals, and now, while attending her best friends wedding, she sees her beloved father making out with her friends mother. Confused and upset…..Megan needs a break to get her head together.

Going to the store, she buys liquor for underage Annika (Chloe Grace Moretz) and her friends. Unexpectedly, Megan and Annika become friends and instead of attending a week long seminar, Megan crashes at Annika’s house for that week…just to get her head together. As RomCom’s go…..during that week, Megan meets Annika’s dad, Craig (Sam Rockwell) and the stage is set for Megan to finally come of age at 28 years old.

“Laggies” is a fun way to spend two hours. Keira Knightley is, well, Keira Knightley. That smile…..oh, that smile. Sam Rockwell is steady as always, and Chloe Grace Moretz is very good. Not for kids.

“The Maze Runner” Movie Review

4-Watertowers ForCarol.com Movie Review(A-MAZE-ing Survival Story)

Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) arrives, without his memory, in an enclosed wilderness surrounded by a wall that opens up in the morning into a maze and closes at night.

the maze runner blogGreeting Thomas are a number of boys some of whom have been here for 3 years.  They have learned to adapt to their situation, knowing that supplies will arrive every 30 days with a new person, by forming a society with three rules. The most important of which is that only the designated runners can enter the maze….for if they fail to come back before the doors close, they will not survive the monsters within.

But, with the arrival of the more curious Thomas, things begin to change. Thomas wants to know more…..he needs to find out how to escape….and running the maze is the only way to find answers. Problem is…he is not a runner.

With the arrival of Teresa (Kaya Scodelario) the only female, holding a note in her hand stating that she is the last, the captive society must adapt to the new situation to survive.

Not only will the supplies stop, but, the “Grievers” a half biological half machine spider-like monster that preyed on the runners at night are now roaming the maze during the day and coming into the wilderness space at night.

The captives cozy world has changed into something much more dangerous. Adapt or die.

“The Maze Runner” is a very interesting look into the need for societal rules, but, also the need to think outside the box and question authority, when those rules prove to be insufficient. Curiosity can be the key to survival while accepting the status quo can be dangerous.

Not for younger kids as there is a good bit of violence and death. There are a few s-words.  This movie is based on book #1 of the “The Maze Runner” book trilogy by James Dashner.

“Dial A Prayer” Movie Review

4-Watertowers ForCarol.com Movie Review(Advice From the Heart)

Cora (Brittany Snow) was raised in a religious family, but, started hanging out with an anti-religion group of miscreants.

dial a prayerOne night, with the group, Cora desecrated a statue of Mary and burned a church down. Unfortunately, she was the only one of the group that was caught, and even more unfortunately, there was a woman in the church.

Her lawyer father, working with Bill (William H. Macy), saved Cora from going to jail by offering to put her to work in Bill’s dial a prayer company. This company consists of phones that are manned from 8 AM to 4 PM offering prayers for anyone who calls.

Cora thinks this is stupid, but, accepts her punishment…somewhat. She answers the phones, but, rather than give a meaningless prayer from a binder of prayers, she gives valuable, real-world advice, from the heart (“You should dump him”) and then the meaningless prayer.

Cora is a sensation and Bill is ecstatic that he took a chance on Cora, even though it has been a rough go. One day a caller comes looking for Cora and, over time, she falls in love….until she finds out who he is.

“Dial a Prayer” is a much better move than I thought it would be, and certainly much better than the 5.2 given it on IMDb.  Brittany Snow and William H. Macy are both excellent. The plot is interesting and it unfolds like a book….a little at a time until the entire picture can be seen.  Very cool.  Not for kids.

“Wild” Movie Review

4-Watertowers ForCarol.com Movie Review(Pacific Crest Trail Therapy)

Cheryl Strayer (Reese Witherspoon) is battling some serious demons. One way to confront herself and those demons, she decides, is to hike over 1,000 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail.

wild blog94 days later she finds herself and excises (hmmm, exercises?) her demons.

The death of her mother (Laura Dern) initiates Cheryl’s slide into drug and sex self-abuse. Still married, Cheryl smokes, then injects, heroin and has sex, anywhere, with any man showing the least bit of interest. Her husband finds her and takes her home, but, they divorce.

Cheryl then takes a hike. Literally.

“Wild” is a fascinating, powerful, look at one person’s attempt to find herself and excise her demons.  Along the trail she meets nice people willing to help her and creeps who she has to ward off.  The PCT (Pacific Crest Trail) is a fundamental part of the movie, but, secondary to learning about Cheryl, via flashbacks during the hike, and the trials and tribulations life has handed her from her abusive father, her mother dying, heroin addiction, sex addiction, and divorce.

“Wild” is not for kids as it deals with intense adult themes. Reese Witherspoon gets naked, has sex multiple times, and does drugs.  What happened to Legally Blonde?  ;-)

The real Cheryl Strayer makes a short appearance.

My First Few Weeks at Cal State Long Beach Among Other Things :-)

Claire Guite, our 2015 Carol Phan College Scholarship recipient, sent in this blog entry talking about her first few weeks at Cal State Long Beach!

My First Few Weeks at Cal State Long Beach Among Other Things :-)

When I entered for this scholarship, I thought for sure I wasn’t going to win because my entry was so “out there,” I guess you could say. I have always had a passion for creativity through artwork, so I sent a link of my online portfolio of some of the artwork I’ve done in the past few years as my application. When the text came to my phone notifying me that I had won, I was absolutely ecstatic, shocked, and grateful all at the same time. The money covered the cost of my Macbook Pro, the computer I am currently using for college. Without the scholarship, I wouldn’t have been able to get such a nice computer to take with me to college, and for that I am extremely grateful!

Fast-forwarding a few months, I am now about four weeks into my college experience here at Cal State Long Beach, and it has been quite a change of pace. Being about six to seven hours from home, I’ve realized how many things I actually miss about Tracy that I thought I never would. My whole life has been uprooted and replanted here in Long Beach. I appreciate even more the friends, family, and church family that I have in Tracy and how they have influenced me in such a positive way that I could never fully explain. Even four weeks in, I still feel like I’m not settled in yet, although it seems to be a dream to be studying Fashion Design in Long Beach.

The very first week of school felt like a month. I have never experienced such a long week in my life. Ever. My roommate and I wanted to pass out after the first day of class. To say CSULB’s campus is big would be an understatement, and riding bikes to and from class in the midst of humid sunshine creates a workout plan for you that doesn’t even involve going to the gym. ;) I probably looked like a typical freshman on the first few days of school, lost and clueless (Someone in one of my classes actually thought I was an international student. She learned quickly when I started talking.)

Here is a picture of me and my roomie, Pearl.

All complaining aside, I am thoroughly enjoying my classes and professors, and have already learned so much in such little time. Learning about fashion, the fashion industry, sewing, and the technicalities of fashion sketching confirm just how much I want to do this for the rest of my life. There are three main questions I’ve learned that everyone here asks someone they don’t know. The first is: “What’s your name?” The second: “What year are you?” And the third: “What’s your major?” Although I’ve been asked this about 1,000 times, it’s so cool to see what other people are studying and have passions for.

I am starting to get connected with clubs as well as Christian community, and have started to make some new friends. :) In such a huge school, it’s important to me to be able to have friends that share the same beliefs. I can say that there is still so much for me to learn and get involved in, and it’s so exciting to think about. The “college experience” is certainly a thing like no other, and I’m sure it will continue to surprise me in ways living in Tracy, CA never could!

“Welcome to Me” Movie Review

4-Watertowers ForCarol.com Movie Review(Wacky, Weird, Quirky)

Alice Klieg (Kristen Wiig) has won $86 million in the lottery.

welcome to me blogShe has borderline personality disorder and, since she is now rich, she stopped taking her meds and said goodbye to her psychiatrist.

Alice wants to host a TV talk show.  But this is a talk show unlike any other since Alice will talk about her. Her life, her thoughts, her struggles.

James Marsden runs a TV production firm. He tells Alice that it will cost $15 million to run 100 episodes of “Welcome to Me”. She pays it, and the TV show is born.

Unfortunately, being off her meds and not under doctors care, Alice spins out of control ignoring her best friends and falling deeper into mental illness.

“Welcome to Me” is a wonderfully quirky movie.  Kristen Wiig depicts the borderline personality disorder of Alice from near normal to off-the-wall to near normal again perfectly.  And Wiig is very beautiful as you can plainly see when she walks naked (full frontal) thru a gambling casino at the depth of her illness.

Not for kids. Rated “R” for very good reasons, but worth the cost of rental if you like quirky movies.

“The Skeleton Twins” Movie Review

4-Watertowers ForCarol.com Movie Review(Suicidal Twins Reunite)

Maggie Dean (Kristen Wiig) is just about to swallow a handful of pills when her cell phone rings.

the skeleton twins blogShe answers it and finds out that her brother, Milo (Bill Hader), is in the hospital after slashing his wrists.

Maggie travels to visit her brother even though the two of them have not talked for 10 years.

When he recovers sufficiently to travel, Maggie and Milo go back to Maggie’s house in NY, their hometown. Maggie’s husband, Lance (Luke Wilson), welcomes the long missing Milo with open arms. And Milo hooks up with an old teacher/lover, Rich (Ty Burrell).

But all is not rosy.  The twins have been irrevocably screwed-up thanks to their father’s suicide, when they were 14, and a shit mother. Although they love each other, Milo is still battling with being a failed actor (“I am the one who peaked in High School”) while Maggie has a wonderful husband who she cheats on constantly (“You can’t fuck your troubles away”).

“The Skeleton Twins” is brutally realistic in it’s depiction of life. Not everyone is happy and not everyone is famous or rich. Life is a struggle and you can either tough it out, or leave it like their father did. But, they have each other.

Not for kids as this movie deals with adult themes that most kids less than 30 have no idea about. Life is not easy, and no, you can’t conquer it. You have to learn to live it….bumps and all. Or get out early.

Kristen Wigg and Bill Hadar are tremendous, the pacing is perfect, and the ending is terrifying.

“Woman in Gold” Movie Review

4-Watertowers ForCarol.com Movie Review(Golden)

Maria Altmann (Helen Mirren) has just buried her sister.

woman in gold 1At the cemetery, she is talking to an old family friend when she finds out that the friend’s son is a lawyer who has fallen on hard times. Needing legal advice from someone she can trust, she asks her friend to connect them.

Randy Schoenberg (Ryan Reynolds) has just accepted a position with a law firm, but, visits Maria to find out what she needs.

Maria’s family lived in Vienna, Austria before WWII as the Nazis were on the verge of taking over. They were identifying the Jews, shutting down their businesses, and shipping them off to concentration camps. Some escaped in the nick of time, Maria being one.

But the Nazis claimed everything as their own, including a now famous Austrian art treasure: A painting of the “Woman in Gold” by Gustav Klimt that belonged to Maria’s family. The “Woman in Gold” happened to be her Aunt, Adele Bloch-Bauer (Antje Traue).

Austria just announced a new restitution plan where Austria may, more easily, return items to families that were stolen in WWII. Maria wants her Aunt back, and Randy is the lawyer she chose to help her get the painting back.

“Woman in Gold” is an excellent movie with flashbacks to the Nazis occupation of Vienna….and Maria’s escape. Like “The Monuments Men” it shows the arrogance of the Nazis as they claimed ownership of everything now under their, temporary, control. It also shows the continued arrogance 50 years later of the Austrian government even though they have a new, more liberal, restitution policy.

Ok for the whole family, but, the kids won’t like it as deals mostly with adult themes. Helen Mirren and Ryan Reynolds are terrific.

“Taken 3” Movie Review

4-Watertowers ForCarol.com Movie Review(Particularly Skillful)

Bryan Mills (Liam Neeson) and Lenore St. John (Famke Janssen) want to get closer again. They are just waiting for Lenore to leave her current husband, Stuart St. John (Dougray Scott).

taken 3Problem is…..Lenore is murdered before that can happen and Mills is the suspected murderer.

With the cops and the Russian mob after him, Mills disappears down the “Rabbit Hole” so he has time to find out who murdered Lenore and to protect his daughter, Kim (Maggie Grace).

“Taken 3” is a linear plot, with a surprising twist, filled with edge-of-your-seat action. Some things that happen do not make sense, but, that is ok.  “Taken 3” is not for kids, but, it is a great mindless action flick that is also the last of the “Taken” trilogy….or is it?

“Broken Flowers” Movie Review

3.5-Watertowers ForCarol.com movie reviews(Quirky, Quiet, Droll)

Don Johnston’s (Bill Murray) latest girlfriend just walked out. But, Don takes this life changing event like he seems to take everything else: Quietly.

broken flowers blogIn the foyer, there is a pink envelope among the incoming mail that his now ex-girlfriend thinks is from his current lover. Don opens it and finds that it is typed in red ink and appears to be from a past lover who says she had a boy with him. That boy is now 19 and may show up at his door. The letter is not signed and the postmark is unreadable so there is no way to track the writer…or is there?

Winston (Jeffery Wright) is Don’s next door neighbor and friend. Winston is a wanna-be detective and decides to engage in an online investigation. He asks Don to list his girlfriends from that time period and he will try to track them down.

Don gives him the list, and a short time later, Winston gives him an itinerary to visit all four of the living ex’s (one has died) with instructions to look for a tendency towards pink and to try to find an old typewriter.

Don does not want to go, but, being wealthy (computers) and having lots of time on his hands, he goes. What he finds is…….oh, you will just have to watch it to find out.

“Broken Flowers” is Bill Murray at his droll-est. He spends most of the movie silently watching life pass him by at his own speed which is slower and more deliberate than everyone else. He is perfectly content just to sit and stare, and the movie does the same. Very interesting and Murray pulls it off perfectly. Even one scene when the very beautiful daughter of one of his ex’s, Lolita (Alexis Dziena), comes out to get her phone completely naked, Don just sits and watches….silently.

Not for kids, and not for those who expect lots of talking or action, but, I loved it!

Quirky, Quiet, and Perfectly Droll.

“Ant-Man” Movie Review

4.5-Watertowers ForCarol.com Movie Reviews(Amazing! Astounding! Avenger?)

Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) has just spent 3 years in San Quentin for a burglary. He has high hopes for getting a good job (after all he, like me, has a Masters in Electrical Engineering) and spending more time with his young daughter, Cassie (Abby Ryder Fortson).

ant man blogThe job he finds is at Baskin-Robbins…..until they find out he is an ex-con and is fired. Hanging with his friend, Luis (Michael Pena), Scott returns to a life of crime.

Luis has a burglary in mind:  Break into an old man’s safe while the old man is out of town. During the burglary Scott steals a fancy suit and helmet. At home he tries it on, pushes the button, and is shocked to find he is the size of an ant….with a voice talking to him!  Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) is that voice and is the old man who’s house he burgled and took the suit from.

Unbeknownst to Scott, Dr. Pym has been watching him and has selected him to be the next Ant-Man. He also set up the burglary.

Now all Scott has to do, as Ant-Man, is save the world from the evil Darren Cross / Yellowjacket (Corey Stoll).

“Ant-Man” is a terrific fun-filled action adventure.  Must see.  Paul Rudd is absolutely perfect for the part being part serious and part hilarious and you never know which is coming. Fine for the whole family. The special effects were astounding.  “Thomas the Tank Engine” looks so ominous from the ant perspective and so funny when the camera zooms out to watch the toy crash…like a toy. Amazingly well done.

Also, no one seemed to catch this (I did!) but in one scene Luis is whistling the theme to the “It’s a Small World” ride at Disneyland / DisneyWorld.  Loved it!

Stay ALL the way through the credits, then let me know (Comment below) what the last segment means and who is that guy (I already know two of them….the other one!) ?   :-)

“Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief” Movie Review

3-Watertowers ForCarol.com Movie Reviews(Demi-Gods & Monsters)

Percy Jackson (Logan Lerman) loves the water and hates school.  He has recently transferred to a new school where his mother (Catherine Keener) hopes he will blossom.

lighting thief blogHe does not.  But his friend, Grover (Bandon T. Jackson) is with him all the way.

One day a substitute teacher is assigned to their class and they head out to a Museum tour.  There, Mr. Brunner (Pierce Brosnan) and Grover save Percy from a flying demon (the substitute teacher) demanding the stolen lightning bolt (it was taken from Zeus (Sean Bean, with his head intact)).  WTF?

This is when Percy finds out he is special. A demi-God: The offspring of his human mother and Poseidon (Kevin McKidd). THAT explains his love of water.

Zeus threatens Poseidon with war if Percy does not return the lightning bolt within 10 days.  Only problem is….Percy did not take it.

The race is on to find the lightning bolt and save the world from destruction. But first Percy needs to be trained, so off to Demi-God training camp for him!  There he meets beautiful and powerful Anabeth (Alexandra Daddario) the daughter of Athena (the beautiful Melina Kanakaredes).

Do they save the world?

“Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief” is a fun movie good for the whole family. Fantastic special effects.  It is based on the Percy Jackson series of books by Rick Riordan.

“Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life” Movie Review

3.5-Watertowers ForCarol.com movie reviews(Pandora’s Box Lost & Found)

An earthquake in Greece uncovers a long lost temple under the Mediterranean Sea.

lara croft the cradle of lifeAdventurer Lara Croft (Angelina Jolie), investigates and finds that within the ruins lies an orb (from Alexander the Great) that provides directions to the long lost, and much feared, Pandora’s Box.

Evil Nobel Prize winning scientist, Mance Rayder…..errrr, Jonathan Reiss (Ciaran Hinds) wants the diseases that might be in Pandora’s Box so he can control the world (after he designs and antidote for himself and selected others).

He will stop at nothing to get the orb and Pandora’s Box.

“Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life” is a fun adventure thriller much like the first movie. I loved it, but, it is not quite a good as “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider”.  Again, for some reason, Lara needs male help (maybe because this is a 2003 movie?) this time in the form of the mercenary, Terry Sheridan (Gerard Butler).

She could do this alone, and her life would be so much easier.

We need a third movie!  Angelina?  Brad?  Who’s the boss….oh, I know.  Angelina!!! haha

“Lara Croft: Tomb Raider” Movie Review

4-Watertowers ForCarol.com Movie Review(Exciting Action Thriller)

Lady Lara Croft (Angelina Jolie) practices fighting a robot in a simulated tomb in her house.  Because of the convergence of planets that only happens once every 5,000 years Lara will need all her skills.

lara croftWhile sleeping one night as the convergence is just starting, she hears a ticking clock. She finds that clock in a hidden room and breaks through the camouflage to the crux of the clock: The all seeing eye.

Not knowing exactly what this is, she seeks the advice of a trusted friend who puts her in touch with the Illuminati.  They need the seeing eye since it is a key to two parts of a triangle that when put together, at exactly convergence time, will grant the holder the ability to control time.

After the Illuminati steal the eye from her mansion, Lara finds a letter from her long lost dad (her real life dad, Jon Voight) tasking her with saving the world by destroying the triangle.

Off they go to far away lands and adventure.

After stealing one half of the triangle in Cambodia, Lara finds she needs the Illuminati (they now have the eye) and the Illuminati need Lara (because she has now acquired one half of the triangle).

An unlikely alliance forms as they head off to find the second triangle piece before the convergence.

“Lara Croft: Tomb Raider” is a fun “Indiana Jones” like movie with chills, thrills, adventure, and excitement. Angelina Jolie is terrific. Daniel Craig, before 007, has a medium sized part as a bad guy, sort of.  OK for kids even though there is at least one s*it word that I remember.

“Paul Blart Mall Cop 2” Movie Review

3.5-Watertowers ForCarol.com movie reviews(Paul Blart in Las Vegas)

Six years after the events in the first movie, Paul Blart (Kevin paul blart mall cop 2James) lost his wife of six days (she divorced him) and his mother got hit by a milk truck while getting the morning paper. His daughter, Maya (Raini Rodriguez), is all he has left and she just found out she has been accepted to UCLA (but, she is afraid to tell him).

Since he saved the mall six years ago,he is at a low point in his life until he gets an invitation to attend the SOTA Conference in Las Vegas (a conference and exhibit for mall cops). Thrilled with the invitation, Paul and Maya go there and stay at the Wynn.

So do a gang of bad guys looking to steal the valuable art work in the Wynn.

Maya stumbles into the Presidential Suite where the bad guys are planning the heist. They kidnap her and her new boyfriend, Lane (David Henrie).  Maya calls her dad and Paul Blart Mall Cop is called into action.

“Paul Blart Mall Cop 2” is way better than I thought it would be. Funny, action packed (mostly slapstick) with a decent plot. Paul Blart is not as bumbling as he was in the first movie, in fact, he gave a pretty awesome Keynote speech for the Conference and did a fine job knocking out the gang members. BUT….it was written by Kevin James and produced by Adam Sandler, sooooooo, don’t expect Oscar winning performances. Do expect slightly stupid comedy with some poignant moments, and you won’t be disappointed.  No f-words, good for the whole family. By the way, Kevin James is a damn good on that Segway.
