Software geeks, Millie (Jodie Comer) and Keys (Joe Keery), developed an artificial intelligence (AI) based game called “Life Itself”. The object of that game was to watch the people in the game grow and learn from their experiences.
It never made it to market.
And, I have no idea how this happened….(I will watch it again?), but, Software mogul, Antwan (Taika Waititi), somehow, illegally, got the AI component of Millie and Keys game and hid it in the “Free City” game his company developed.
The object of “Free City” is to control the main player’s avatars (those with glasses) to win battles. The rest of the “people” in the game are just background players.
Everyday of his “life”, background player Guy (Ryan Reynolds) wakes up, says hello to his goldfish, puts on his blue shirt, gets coffee, and walks with his best friend, Buddy (Lil Rel Howery), to work where he is a teller and Buddy is the guard.
The same stuff happens everyday……until Guy spots a woman on the street who changes his “life” forever.
Then all hell breaks loose, and……
Oh, to see what happens you can watch this movie on Disney+.
“Free Guy” is very confusing for the first 20 or 30 minutes as you try to figure out what is going on. Once you understand that Guy is becoming empowered by his AI engine and that the woman he meets is actually Millie trying to prove the theft of their AI code….it plays much better. A bit violent for the young ones, and one F-word! (On Disney+…..WTF???…..times are changing).
