“Soul” Movie Review

Joe (Jamie Foxx) is a middle school music teacher with dreams of becoming a full-time jazz musician. He is, after all, a very good musician….just not spectacular.

One day, an old student of his who is now a musician, Curley (Questlove), hooks Joe up with a famous jazz saxophonist, Dorothea (Angela Bassett), and lo-and-behold, Joe nails the interview with a great jazz improv and gets the gig!

Ecstatic over his dream coming true, Joe, talking on his cell phone, falls into an open manhole and…….dies….kinda…..well…..he is in transition.

Not wanting to head to the great beyond, Joe runs the other way and ends up becoming a mentor in the great before, a place where new souls are being groomed for their earthly visit (with the help of their nearly newly dead mentors).

Except for one…..

Soul 22 (Tina Fey) has been driving her mentors crazy since time began. Mother Teresa hated her, and she drove Abraham Lincoln to tears, and many more.

Soul 22, Joe

Joe was assigned Soul 22, and if he failed (which is a sure thing, right?), he heads off to the great beyond and soul 22 keeps on truckin in the great before.

Then…..the unexpected happens, and……

Oh, to see what happens you will have to watch the movie. 🙂

“Soul” is my least favorite Pixar movie since “Up”, and is a not really a kids movie, nor is it as inspirational as many have said. It is depressing, slow, and, we both dozed off…which NEVER happens….and we’ve seen lots and lots of movies (just look around this site). Where “The Queens Gambit” is enthralling entertainment, “Soul” is soul-less gnillarhtne entertainment.

The uptake is that everyday you are alive is a gift and your “spark” or purpose should not be the focus. (I may have missed the point, but, then don’t make a movie that is so confusing, and boring).

That said, as a jazz alto saxophonist for the first 20 years or so of my life…..I LOVED the sax and the jazz in this movie, but, there is precious little of both.

More Disney movies….most of which are WAY better than this one.
