Movie Review: “Elvis”

Elvis Presley (Austin Butler) and his mother Gladys (Helen Thomson) moved to a black neighborhood after his father Vernon (Richard Roxburgh) was sent to jail.

Elvis was a talented kid with quite the singing voice. He grew up loving gospel and the blues and was, eventually, signed by Sun Records.

Colonel Tom Parker (Tom Hanks) was (apparently) an illegal immigrant with a flare for “taking people’s money while leaving them with a smile”. And he did very well as a, somewhat shady, promoter in the circus and then for Country superstar, Hank Snow.

One day, Colonel Tom, heard a voice on a record that blew his mind!

He knew then and there that he had to manage this kid, because he knew……

Elvis, Gladys, Colonel Tom, Vernon

The two of them could change the world.

And they did…..

You can watch this movie on HBO Max or you can stream it on your fav streamer.

“Elvis” is an absolutely terrific movie…..far from the boring biography of a famous person that I thought it would be. Baz Luhrmann kicked some major directing butt making this visually stunning, emotionally impactful, heart wrenching, movie about a (THE) musical icon, Elvis.

The cast is stupendous…..especially Austin Butler and Tom Hanks.

Watch for it at Oscar time! Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Director! (my not so humble predictions).
