“In the Heights” Movie Review

Washington Heights in New York City is, according to Usnavi (Anthony Ramos), a dying neighborhood.

Living is this neighborhood are four friends:

Usnavi’s dream is to move back to the Dominican Republic, fix up the hurricane damaged home and business he knew as a boy, and live in tropical bliss for the rest of his life….

Benny (Corey Hawkins) seems to be happy in the heights where he is working as a dispatcher for a local car rental / taxi business, the only problem is his girlfriend left……

Nina Rosario (Leslie Grace) was accepted to NYU, Columbia, and Stanford. She chose Stanford, but…..

Vanessa (Melissa Barrera) works in a beauty salon painting nails, but, dreams of becoming a famous fashion designer….

In the summer of 1999 they all got together in the heights…..and their lives changed forever.

“In the Heights” is an exuberant movie musical with lots of singing, dancing, angst, and, ultimately, love. Keeping their culture vibrant is important to everyone in the heights…..including, I suppose, Lori and her family who lived in Washington Heights for a brief time when she was a child (oddly she does not remember the dancing in the street….).

We LOVED it!

In fact, movies that revolve around singing and dancing are my absolute favs!
